That actually is armor that Shepard gets. It's reverse engineered Collector tech. I found that out after I had gone back and looked into some things :P

Hanar can hold a gun in every tentacle! You know how many guns that is? And the elcor! They are walking TANKS! You can fit anti-tank or anti-infantry guns on top of them and have them mow down everything in their path!
