I would just like to say that Alot of the English dubbing SUCKS! They like to YELL ALL THE TIME TO SHOW EMOTION.
I hate it when Noobs tell me "I can't watch stuff with Subtitles, I don't see whats going on in the show" WELL DAMN!!! Most Jap
ANIME IS JUST STANDING AROUND ANYWAY. I'd take the way the Directer made it too be anyday. Alot is lost in the Translation. SUBTITLES FOREVER! unless your a noob...
I used to HATE subtitles (AKA the Hiden Tiger movie) but sence then I have downloaded so many jap anime shows like Cowboy beebop, and Trigun (the versions not in english) that I have gotten used to it...
To be honest, I'm a dub person. But I don't mind watching subtitles if I need to. I just think people who complain about reading subtitles though are just ignorant. Not to mention the excuses they come up with...
I honestly prefer to watch the dub, but that won't stop me from watching it with subtitles. There have been many things such as "Flying People Hidden Wires" (CTHD) Where it is just much better with subtitles. If anyone has ever seen Love Hina, there is another example. The english dub ruins the show. One of the characters sounds like she is a english person trying to sound like a japanese person who is trying to sound texan! It's just that bad. Not to mention the jokes that are lost from the english sub to the english dub. So, dub all the way for me, unless they just did a horrible job of it.
i only like dubs for shows like Rurouni Kenshin, which are almost perfectly translated, just made better for grammer purposes (restructuring sentences rather than changing things)
but i despise a lot of dub voices (Su-chan from Love Hina, Naruto's dub voice, Iruka's from Naruto and a few others)
and i watched dubbed Love Hina before i watched subbed...
I dont mind either, but I prefer dubbing the most, especially on commentaries. Some times the text goes away to fast for me to read, I would rather have those dubbed over anything
For example - I'm more of a RAW guy myself, but with the DVDs of stuff like Bleach and Naruto the subs are worth killing your self over. Some dubs, like Gundam Seed or Neon Genesis, are very proffessional and suit characters perfectly. A thing with subs is that (assumming you're listening to it in Japanese) they can be completely wrong, such as in Naruto when Zabuza asks for a kunai the subs say "hey, brat, give me a balsalm pear" ,no lie!
But ultimately if I have to decide, I say Subs all the way!!!
If I hear a given anime in Dubbed English, then I tend to associate that Anime as such and when I hear it otherwise I do not like it.
But then if I watch a movie that has been subtitled, and then I hear the dubbed ver. then I dont like the dubbed. Its all a matter of perspective and timing.
For example Ronin Warriors, I watched this Anime back in 1994 when it was shown on TV. I am used to the dubbed voices, Of Matt Hill and a host of others who have gone on to great voice acting careers.
I picked up the whole DVD series + OVA of ronin warriors and the OVA's had small changes of some of the voice actors which bothered me AND I decided to watch the series in Japanases with subtitles. I did not like it at all. Most of the original voices are angry, and stern sounding as it their custom... but i am not used to it.
Now I watch a movie call Curse of the Undead Yoma which was a killer flick, I own it subtitled but a couple of years ago it came out dubbed and I was so used to with the original vocie acting that hearing it any other way bothered. me
Yeah, some subtitles are just plain horrible. I have Full metal Alchamist 1-26 and it is bad.... However the FMA they have on Swim is Horrible too. I can't stand thier voices.....
Lets take Berserk for an Example, with the english dubbing they tryed to make it more funny/light/humorous But in all actuallity it wasn't very, or meant to be that way. I watched 1-12 with the English dubbing and 12-25 with the subtitles. Alot of characters who say funny things really are being badasses and swearing.
I really don't mind the diffrence between subbing and dubbing. I usually watch a series dubbed first (so i can just concentrate the story) then usually i go back and re-watch it subbed.
Wow, thank God someone got around to making a topic on this subject. I'm so sure it hasen't been done to death in a battle that is totally fucking pointless.
Usually I find dubs pretty bad.. why do they have to make girls' voices so high and annoying? They certainly aren't that bad in japanese. I also find that English can never translate so well into the anime. Anime is a japanese thing and I think that overlaying it with English dubs doesn't do the anime justice. I'd prefer subs all the way, but I agree with Zylo that if I had the chance I would learn japanese and do away with both all together.
In some things I prefer subtitles to dubbing as, alot of Anime English dubbing is crap. However , now and again something comes along and suprises you. Any of you watched Hellsing, the VA's in that are pretty damn amazing, Crispin Freeman making an excellent choice for Alucard. I also thought the voice acting in Trigun was good as well, but hey thats just me.
There are only two things that Dubs are good for: Watching anime and doing other crap, and Cowboy Bebop. Its hard to watch anime in english. It just sounds so awkward, the english voices aren't even similar to the voices in the original japanese.
Some Dubs by Madman are ok likeGhost in the Shell but some dubs make the anime not worth watching. Although i would perfer to watch anime with english dubs, the quuality of the dubs is appaling Therefore i watch most anime with fansubs and i diont mind
Dubs seem too... "Fake" for me....I really can't get past that little twitch in my head when I see a dubbed anime/movie. Not that I can't watch it at all, because I can, but the Subs just seem a little more authentic...
Yeah i knew that but i was thinking about other shit when i was posting so i just skipped a whole line..but still ADV do do SOME good dubing but mostly its all crap
