I want to give this thread a try. In your entire careers of gaming, which games have given you the best thrill of victory and sense of accomplishment once you beat them? What games did you work months, perhaps even years, towards trying to beat, and how strong was the euphoria once you conquered them? Did you do anything special to celebrate reaching the top of the gaming mountain? It could be any game, any system, from any console generation. And it doesn't have to be games that took you a long time to beat. Maybe you just spent one weekend locked in a room, unable to bring yourself to stop playing this ONE game that you just had to beat. Describe the challenge, describe the efforts towards beating it, with all the juicy details, like tossed controllers, and binge drinking to take away the pain of failure. I'm being facetious, of course, but seriously, what games gave you the biggest thrill of victory once you won?
God of Wars' Challenge of The Gods was a hefty accomplishment for me, since it took about 3 days of non-stop trying to complete it. I've never been more frusturated or closer to breaking a controller in half before. Beating both Halo's on Legendary were equally exhilarating with my same friend. But we both yelled and screamed during the countless deaths we suffered at the hands of jackal snipers. F-Zero GX probably took me the longest to master, as far as the story mode is concerned, because of one stupid mission. 7 hours straight of hair-pulling, head-banging, squelched banshee crying horror. Mission 8 I believe, The F-Zero Grand Prix where Balck Bull and Blood Falcon are constantly wailing on you. I only beat it through luck since I had drained all my energy during the first few hours of trying. I don't need the head-aches associated with that anymore...
dude the greastest game challange of all time is morrowind, fucking 50 hours just to clear the main quest and another 25 to do all the other side quest, and thats not even adding the expansion games. omg so long. the next game after that is probably golden sun
FFX - first time through, 75 hours of sheer bliss, and that is without the ultimate weapons. Ninja Gaiden - when I died in the training level I figured this one was going to be a challenge, and boy was I right Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven - Once I got Tessu unlocked it was all good
Um, I'm not sure if this counts, but being able to beat one of my really good friends on Halo 2 online. When we first started playing, we played a 1 on 1 custom game and he totally owned me, now when we play it is a lot more matched and even. I was so happy when I finally got more kills then him in slayer or beat him in rumble training. Yeah, my story sucks.
Mega Man II. I just beat it a couple days ago. I'd never seen the final Wily boss. When I saw it I thought: "Why is he floating-HOLY CRAP!" Actually, beating any Mega Man game feels good. Except 6...I just wanted the few hours I spent on it back. Same goes with Mario games. Come to think of it...I still haven't beaten Super Mario Bros.
I also completed 100% on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. What an ordeal. I've been unable to summon the will to do that with any of the other games since.
Mario Kart 64. I had many races trying to get gold on all circuits and tracks. Felt good unlocking Rainbow Road. Felt better conquering it. : )
There's always a couple of years between me starting a game and beating it. Usually I'll play through until I get to a part that I can't beat in a couple of attempts, or scares the crap out of me. Then I stop playing the game for a couple years or so until I get the nerve/will to pick it back up. I usually beat it then.
The first Devil May Cry was pretty hard for me. I feel like it was by a mixture of skill and luck that I beat the final Boss character. Now I want to go back and try to get the S-rank (which is the highest)
Actually, I thought it was fucking awesome that I beat the Boss in normal mode without the game taking pity on me and unlocking easy mode.
The game I recieved the greatest sense of satisfaction from when I beat it was the first Diablo for the PS... That was a fucking hard ass game for me and I was overwhelmed with joy when I finally beat it...
Devil May Cry on Dante Must Die mode was hard as HELL but it was exhilerating. Now I have to beat Ninja Gaiden Black the same way. It'll be rough I'm sure. Oh and when a buddy and I beat Halo on Legendary in just over 7 hours, that was HARD. Ohh the good ol' days.....
Man...I still haven't beaten Jet Force Gemini...finding all the bears just pissed me off so much. It was hard enough just to find the ship parts.
Anywayz, for me it'd be beating Chrono Trigger legitimately.
I say that because when I first got to the final final final boss...I got completely, um, for lack of better terms...pwnzered. Couldn't beat it no matter how hard I tried. I finally put in Game Genie to just win on the first hit.
About 4 years ago, I turned on my SNES and started a new game on it...got to the final final final boss...beat him in like 10 minutes. And as the credits started rolling, I was just sitting there, thinking to myself "...Wtf? Why was that so easy? How come I couldn't do it all those years ago? Why was I living in fear about Lavos for all this time, then suddenly whoop his ass without breaking a sweat?"
Yeah I never beat Jet Force Gemini for precisely that reason.
Thanks to everyone who started posting again. I hadn't checked back in awhile. Let's get more posts a-goin, tell your friends . I'll make my own post of all the hard challenges I can remember shortly.
Yeah, Halo on freakin' legendary (either of them) is a monumental task.
I personally remember the buildup to the final fight with Ganon in Ocarina, and how nervous I felt at fighting him. Just walking up those dark steps, knowing the evil you were about to face.....I don't think any other boss fight has affected me as much. Damn that was a brilliant game.
