I heard on the news that The Who will be releasing a new CD this year, in the summer. It has new music and some old music too. Its going to rock! Just post your thoughts......
UPDATE: The 2 remaining members of The Who are working on the new album. They have 4 new songs done and the CD will be released in November, of this year. The album might be called Who's Who but it is still up in the air.
Eh, I suspect it'd be Zak Starkey on drums, which is practically the next best thing to having Keith Moon playing on it. In fact, Moon bought him his first drum set and taught him how to play, if I remember correctly. As for the Entwistle thing, John was the greatest rock bassist ever, so that's the area I'm more worried about.
If anything, I think Townshend's songwriting will be quite strong, as Entwistle's death has really forced him and Daltrey to come to terms with their own mortality. Rumor has it that it's going to be a concept album in the vein of Tommy and Quadrophenia. However, the concept album thing really makes it an added challenge - it'll either be as great as a post-Moon and post-Entwistle Who album can be, or an exercise in pretension.
I hope that I am quite wrong. I hope that those two release the album of the year. Starkey would actually be one of the few people that I can picture taking Moon's spot (didn't he right after his death?). Most likely, the album will be pretty good, but nothing particularly rave-worthy.
As an aside, I've always looked as Daltrey as the unnecissary Who member. He usually just stood there throwing his mic around (which was actually pretty badass). But really, as a vocalist, that was one band that he wasn't completely necissary in. Both Townsend and Entwistle both could carry songs quite well. In fact, Entwistle's range was phenominal! Hitting the bass from "Boris" to the high part of "A Quick One" is quite the feat. Sure, Daltrey was need for the more operatic stuff, and he was quite the character, but I'm sure that the Who could have done perfectly well on 80% of their songs without him.
It was actually Kenney Jones, late of The Small Faces and The Faces, who drummed for the Who during the first phase of the post-Moon era. Jones is a fine drummer, but his playing wasn't suited for the hard rock of The Who.
I think a big problem with Daltrey was that he rendered some of Townshend's most introspective, confessional songs (see practically all of The Who By Numbers, which was basically Townshend's confessional singer/songwriter album) ultimately ineffective. Not that Daltrey is a bad vocalist by any means, but sometimes he could've used a bit more subtlety in his delivery.
Heh, I was actually waiting for someone to come in and champion Geddy Lee. Perhaps I should've changed my statement to John being "one of the" greatest rock bassists, or prefaced it with "in my opinion".
UPDATE: The Who Album is now going to be released in early summer. They have enough songs done so they are releasing sooner than expected. The North America part of the tour will begin sometime in September, I also heard something about ZZ Top being part of the tour.....
ur so lucky, they would be awesome to see live. I think the CD got back up though because of their tours. I also heard ACDC is working on some new stuff. I love how all the old bands are putting out new material!
ya, it's pretty sweet, only problem is i'm broke right now and tickets are 200 bucks, but the who is pretty loud, i could probly just sit outside the building and hear it perfectly there, just too bad the concert wasn't outside, then i could sit at home... speaking of outside concerts check this out, i'm going to it tomorrow, friday and saturday.
