Alright I have a Dell Dimension 3000(yes i know it sucks but i didn't buy it so oh well). It has Intel Extreme Graphics 2(which sucks i might add). Upgrading this thing is a bitch in the first place since it only as PCI slots which means upgrading the video card is very limited. But i bought a Jaton GeForce FX5700LE which should play all new games fairly decent. Now i unistalled the extreme graphics, installed the card, plugged everything back up, plugged the monitor into the card, reboot and everything sounds and looks fine. Except for the fact that my monitor automatically enters standby mode and refuses to do anything. I unplug the monitor and replug it to where it was before and it works. I am not very good with computer techinical crap so i need help to figure out what the hell is going on.
I can't remember the exact navigation in a Dimension 3000's BIOS so bear with me. You'll need to plug the monitor into the onboard graphics port for this step. Startup the computer and when the Dell logo appears you'll need to press F2. This takes you to system setup (or BIOS) Then you'll need to look through the screens and look for an option that tells the computer to boot to PCI video first or disable the onboard graphics entirely. Intel Extreme Graphics uses the AGP bus (just because you don't have the slot, doesn't mean it's not there) Which means it can run concurrently with a PCI graphics card. Once you set the boot affinity to the PCI graphics card you should be able to reboot the system and use the graphics card like it was nothing.
try booting with both cards plugged in with you monitor on the old one, then if windows detects it go into the desktop properties and f you see two video card opitions then select your new one put a check on "extend my desktop to this monitor" and "make this my primary monitor", apply and your monitor should go black (or maybe just flash) then plug your monitor into your new one and it should work
Ya. I already did that. Or I should say a friend of mine did that and his exact words were "What the fuck is this. I've never seen any BIOS that looks like this." Then he preceded to go through all of the options and there isn't anyway to switch to PCI from there apparently. I'll look again though.
dude, I had almost the same problem when I installed a USB 2.0 card in a PCI slot last month. The usb sucked all the power out of my system and caused the card to go dead. If you by chance have an old 56kbps modem hooked up in the PCI slots, take it out and start it up agian. I took mine out and everything worked out fine. BTW, I own a Dell Demention 8200 so things should be kind of the same....just a thought
thats cuz dell sucks!!! (so does Jer for the right money ive heard!) well all my ideas have been said already.....including the power supply idea Jer had.
i had that same problem, a technician told me to make sure that the card is securely in place, so just take it out and put it back in firmly this time, let me know if that helps or not.
i am glad you came by to help. Who every game you the +2 is a moron.
Anyways, if you bought the card OEM, then it most likely came with a CD. Possibly install the CD first. If you already did the bios check, then make sure you aren't stressing your PSU. (most likely not.) Also, try installing on a different computer if you can, to make sure it isn't the card that is fried.
OK this is simple to fix. It will run off your old card because your old card is most likely an onboard card (attached to the mother board). Now the problem with those are, you can uninstall them but windows has a plug and play feature that lets it run with out the drivers. Which makes it the primary because it is on board.
To fix: Right Click on the my computer icon, go to properties. Hardware tab, Device manager. Select the monitors section. There should be 2. One plug and play and your new one. Right click the plug and play one and select disable. Making your new one the only one that should be able to work. Plug your monitor back into your new one and restart.... or restart and replug. Either or. If you need more help just message me. More idea will come with more information, but I am pretty sure this will make it all better.
