CNN did a sister report to the cartoons of Mohammed scandal where the mentioned a comic book coming out aimed at Arabiac youths. This comic is going to be called The 99.
I found few sites about it, but this one seemd to have the same story I heard on CNN.
Being a comic book fanatic, I am anxious to see this, for multiple reasons.
It looks like it is drawn well, and the characters look amazing.
It seems to be done w/ the utmost sincerity by the creator, Naif al-Mutawa .
I have a love of knowledge, and I truly dont know enough about the Arabic culture, or the Islamic faith.
The 99 refers to the 99 virtues the Islamic faith attributes to Allah. Virtues like wisdom, strength, tolerance, and more, and each power will be represented by a single character and the more of these characters that are together the more powerful the power base.
This comic is going to be translated into english and published by Marvel comics in America, and I will definitly be picking this one up.
The 99 Gems seems to be alot of Gems to go out to look for, but it'll make a nice series, Especially a good serious to explain Islamic Culture that many Americans So much Hate without knowing about it.
i remember when "preacher" came out, alot of religious fanatics called for the downfall of Vertigo. To try and silence the printed word is to scream ignorance. Have you read about the reaction from the extremist muslims over this? it's insane.
They are in an uproar about the political cartoons form a Danish paper. this comic is being done by a muslim and for muslims, and he, Naif al-Mutawa , is beng careful not to overstep the bounds of Islamic faith.
I heard about this on the BBC one night. I haven't heard about it since, but I hope it does well, if it is supporting the more peaceful mores of Islam. But who knows - I mean, if the West were in the state that the Middle East is now, would kids really be turning in droves to a Christian comic book? It may be a step in the right direction, but what are the safeguards to ensure that it doesn't reinforce (what I consider) negative social mores - e.g. the virtues of honor and modesty justifying honor killings (though probably not that extreme if the audience is really young). I mean, I don't want my kids reading Christian comics that reinforce homophobia.
if we were living in a theocracy like over there, w/ a bunch of Holy Men telling us what is and what is not, I would like to have a book (provided it wasnt edited by the same corrupt bastards) to provide a new way to look at it, and, like most htings, it owuld have to be ableto fit into a context the corrupt bastards wouldnt recognize
