i'm getting ready to build a computer and i am looking to get windows XP home. i already have a pre built computer, from dell....i got it as a grad present, but i have a Windows 98 se OS disc. what should i do? should i just load my custom built computer with the 98se disc and get a Windows XP home edition upgrade with SP-2 or go all out from the start and get a Windows XP home OEM OS. this is the only problem i am having pertaining to my future computer. BTW everything i am getting is new and high end.....so can some one assist me here. i would like a what would you do preference...not a "whatever you want to do"
thanx ahead of time.

Yes, post the specs, and we will be able to help you

Anything lower than a Pentium III 550 with 256MB RAM and a 12GB HDD would be completely useless at XP (or just would run rather slow)

I think a lot of people got confused as to what you were actually asking. You're specifically asking about the OS upgrade, not a hardware upgrade.

When it comes to OS upgrades, it's always better to start from scratch, especially if you're starting with a brand new system anyway. An upgrade from 98 to XP is such a huge jump there's no real point in it. Start from scratch with a XPSP2 disk (Pro if you can get it... it's better than Home). Don't bother with 98.

Dingo, I'm going to disagree with you. XP Pro isn't any better than Home edition. The only thing you miss with Home edition is no SMP support, no advanced file sharing options, and you can't add your computer to a domain. Apart from that they're the same OS...neither is better than the other. Despite my saying that, the reason you'd want Pro over Home edition is Home edition probably won't be eligible for security updates after the end of this year, XP Pro on the other hand should be good for the next 2 years.

Also, to the OP: You can buy an upgrade CD for Windows XP home or Pro and do a clean install. You just need to have the disc from an eligible upgrade product handy so the installer can verify. However, I wouldn't waste the extra money on the upgrade copy anyway. It's $199 in the retail box, and you can get the OEM CD with Certificate of Authenticity for ~$140 online. You can do an upgrade or wipe the hard Drive either way.

Well, I have heard from many people that XP Pro is more stable than Home edition.
But that said, I have used/using both editions and never noticed any difference in stability.

just get the XP disk it will make it a hell of a lot easier for yourself in the time of a reformat .Paying a little bit extra is worth it and plus it will save you a lot of work instead having to load 98 and then upgrade you can just load XP and i think there would be less variables to go wrong just loading XP from the disk.

Yep. It'll just run a little slower than an internal one. If it's USB2.0, you might not even notice the difference.

ah so lemme get this right....i just bought a 250 GB External HDD and i can use it as if i had it as a second HDD internally.....awesome....that's what i thought they did but then a friend of mine said otherwise....i only have 3 GB left on the 400 GB HDD i got in my Dell (grad present but it came with TOO much shit from dell. i'm still finding shit hidden and burried that i'm removing if it doesn't screw shit up.

i also found a new case that i want and it's cheaper and i have mostly the stuff already except the OS which i'm getting from newegg.com....like 5-10 dollars cheaper than tiger but then, tiger has my bare bone case....just now to make sure all of my roms and stuff are compatible and i know how to do that...i know a shit load about computer intelligence but the Hardware gets me confuzzled. i think it's the fact that i never had to worry about build a new comp from ALL new parts . all of the previous piesces i got from my uncle.
