I'm making this because well...the Wachowski Brothers are writing and directing this movie. When I read that I did a double take followed quickly by a "Wha-What?" I started this thread because it's good shock value. Will it be good? I don't know. But I can beat there won't be any monkeys in it.
LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- After years of idling, the big-screen, live-action version of "Speed Racer" is ready to zoom, this time with the creators of "The Matrix" at the wheel.
Brothers Larry and Andy Wachowski are writing and will direct the Warner Bros. movie, their first directorial outing since completing the "Matrix" trilogy in 2003.
Based on the classic 1960s series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida that later was retooled for North American audiences, the big-screen "Speed" will follow the adventures of the young race car driver Speed in his quest for glory in his thundering gadget-laden vehicle, Mach 5. The movie will feature other characters from the show, including Speed's family and his mysterious archrival, Racer X.
The film's producer, Joel Silver, has been trying to get the feature version off the ground since the early 1990s; in 2004, Vince Vaughn even pitched a take that cast him as Racer X. When Silver worked on the spring terrorist thriller "V for Vendetta," which the Wachowskis wrote, he approached them about tackling the project. The duo were reluctant to do it unless they could figure out a way to bring something new to the table.
"They are approaching these racing scenes in a way you've never seen before," said Silver, adding that the brothers are designing the movie's look as they write. Silver also said that unlike the more adult-oriented material of the Wachowskis' past -- "Vendetta," the "Matrix" movies and "Bound" were all rated R -- "Speed" will be family-friendly.
"They wanted to do something that could appeal to everybody," said Silver, who produced the "Matrix" films.
The plan is for the Wachowskis to shoot in summer 2007 for a summer 2008 release.
What do think? Too far? Flop? Interested? Shocked? Or are you massively indifferent?
well i like the wachowski brothers enough that i will give the movie a chance. really what could go wrong with a movie based off a cartoon about racing cars, can't be anyworse that 2 fast 2 furious or gone in 60 seconds.
It'll be fun to see how they try this movie. Especially since it's a family film, and it sounds like they're going with the name "Speed" which is stupid because everyone will hear the title and think of a bus.
Well it certainly seems from the context that it will be live action. Either way, I'm a little iffy on a Speed Racer movie. Don't get me wrong, the anime was amusing, but kinda lame at the same time, y'know? *shrug*
That's a video, if you don't care to watch the vid here's an image.
The cast is as follows:
* Emile Hirsch as Speed. * Christina Ricci as Trixie, Speed's girlfriend. * John Goodman as Pops, Speed's father. * Susan Sarandon as Speed's mother. * Matthew Fox as Racer X, Speed's rival. * A chimpanzee as Speed's pet Chim Chim. * Kick Gurry in negotiations to portray Sparky, Speed's mechanic. * Richard Roundtree in an unnamed role. * Rain as a rookie racer.
I just think this has got to be one of the worst ideas for a movie. I just don't see how this movie can be taken seriously (and the plot outline indicates it's serious) when the original cartoon was so stupid non-serious. I'll wait to see some trailers before I pass a final judgement, but as it stands, I fear the worst from this movie.
there is nothing anyone could say to me that would make me believe this is a serious movie, however it's a movie about a fucking sweet looking car in a race. all i need is some popcorn and a soda.
They’re using some high def thing that comes with guards and it’s beyond anything I’ve ever…. I saw 10 minutes before I left, they did a special thing for me cause they’re just wrapping and having a party tonight, they were still working after I left. They’re doing something where they’re layering film so that the front and the back are in focus like a cartoon and they’re also doing two dimensional and three dimensional stuff and mixing and everything is very, very saturated with some new kind of film, so they actually have to treat the actors in some way so we can hold our own with the background. So it’s every color that wasn’t in The Matrix is seriously in this film.
This is the first thing I've read on Speed Racer. Hope it has mad cinematography. :D
I was at the Comic-Con in 1995 when talks of a live-action Speed Racer movie were getting serious. It only took 13 years! BTW, the latests screens and video look like its gonna be awesome, or at least highly surreal.
I don't find it bad that the SFX are cartoonish and colorful. I wasn't expecting it to be a serious film, anyway. It IS based on a popular 60s cartoon show, after all. If you ask me, after watching the trailer, the film seems to have a lot of potential.
oh my god....your serious!? the douchebags that made the matrix are deciding to waste their funding on an old anime show that premeired in the 60's(?) and was poorly dubbed....i wonder if they're going to redo the poor dubbing....that would be the only reason i would go to that movie just to laugh at it....seriously what are they going to go over?one race and the final tally is him winning??? OMG!! FLOP
