This is just so awesome. Call me sadistic -matter of fact I'm calling myself the same right now- but I hope his neck doesn't break when he falls so he struggles.
I can't help thinking this is a bad idea. Stick the guy in a cell to rot, sure - but DON'T make a martyr of a man like Saddamn Hussein, it'll only cause trouble.
Then again, I'm anti-capital punishment anyways, so maybe I'm biased.
just heard in the news, but anyway I am against death sentence, no matter if someone deserves it ....also there are a lot, who deserve it but don't get it, moreover Justice is made by the Winner.
I just missed it. All I caught was "milestone in Iraq" scrolling acr... wait. Oh teh noes, it looks like I'll get to see, no, wait. They mentioned it for a few seconds and moved on. DAMNIT!
Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of the former Revolutionary Court, were sentenced to join Saddam on the gallows for the Dujail killings after an unsuccessful assassination attempt during a Saddam visit to the city 35 miles north of Baghdad.
Making jokes out of Death is bad taste. Don't use that 'partriotism' excuse. Being proud of your country is all well and good, laughing about execution is not.
Firstly, I am against the death penalty. But I will put that aside for the moment.
The matyr question is a bit of a sticky one. If Sadam had been killed resisting arrest or during the war, he would be a definate matyr. The point of capture and trial was to show him for who he truely was, and then have him killed fairly and by his own people, as a criminal rather than a leader. The reason he was trying to disrupt the trial so much was to discredit it in the eyes of those who would hold him as a maytr, reclaiming that status in a different way.
I think he may well have succeeded. The trial was in many ways a farce. The sentence would be easily overturned had it been passed down in an American court during the appeals process. There were more than enough cases to be made for misstrial that he would probably walk free, or at least have another year in front of cameras in a retrial. It also gave Sadam the publicity he needed to revive his image from being pulled out of a hole in the ground to the strong, proud, Iraqi, Muslim leader.
The whole trial process has been unfair. And the proof of this is that the verdict has been delivered two days before the mid-term elections in the US - in which George Bush's Republican Party is struggling against fierce competition
If a claim is being made that the timing of the verdict was done to coincide with the elections, then I would like to see evidence of said claim. God forbid it be something that the Iraqis chose independently of the US...
Considering that most of the insurgents aren't Iraqis (instead being Syrians and Lebanese that crossed over during Ramadan), I don't believe that it will have too much of an effect on the struggle.
I can't help thinking this is a bad idea. Stick the guy in a cell to rot, sure - but DON'T make a martyr of a man like Saddamn Hussein, it'll only cause trouble.
I'd be surprised if anyone cares enough about Saddam to make him look like a glorious hero. Especially not from the shiites and kurds.
From what little i know about the mans popularity within the middle east (ie pretty much gussing here), i wouldent think he would end up being a maytr as his relations with other middle-eastern countries were never all that good. Also i dont believe he recieved all that much praise from his own citizens (again im not really sure of this). On another point, i have to challange the legitimacy of the court, as Saddam was arrested by the US who were NOT under a UN manditate to be there (not talking about moral arguments here, only legal), the court is not an international one (and so i doubt if it is impartial) from what i believe
Also (taken from CNN website): Saddam did not have legal representation at the hearing. Tim Hughes, a member of Saddam's legal team, told CNN in an interview from Jordan that he objected to the proceeding because Saddam was denied legal advice beforehand.
On the charge of the invasion of kuwait isnt exacally one that can be levied agaisnt him, as lets face it what country hasent illigally invaded another in the past 100 years (or even 50 years), and well why put it forward now instead of at the end of the first gulf war?
To be quite honest the US might as well have assinated him and just 'found' the body as it would have been far easier and have the same result with just as much legality behind it. I do support him getting hanged, but as a side note, i do believe capital punishment should only be used by international human rights courts (not on a domestic level, glad i live in the UK where we dont have it)
?!??! wtf mate? So you think Saddam SHOULDN'T have been arrested? You think he should be set free???
Regardless, the things that he's done is undeniable. They should just cut off all his limbs and throw him on the streets of Baghdad and let him get kicked to death by the childeren.
Also, who would've believed the US if the military came out and said, "Hey guess what? We found Saddam's body while we were tracking him down! Just ignore the coincidence".
Where in LittleRed's post does he say Saddam should be freed?

Oh yes, that would really please the international community to witness the US doing that.

Hey guys, we found Saddam! Unfortunatly, we wheren't able to capture him alive because he had his gold plated AK47 and was allergic to ally soldiers.
Or,
Hey guys, we found the remains of Saddam! Unfortunatly, he seemed to have had an arguement with some pissed off Iraq citizens who procedded to show him how to use sword, pointy end first.
Or,
Hey guys, we found Saddam! Unfortunatly, he fell down the stairs of his bunker and broke his neck, thus ending his life.
Or,
Hey guys, we found Saddam but killed him with one of our internationally-illegal chemical bombs! He had holed himself up in a makeshift bunker in residental Dakka Dakka street but our intelligence guys operating the spy drone accidently hit the drop bomb button instead of the take picture button.
All this talk about "he should be beaten etc. etc. insert jingoisitic crap here" is stupid. As Americans, we should be above that. And I really think killing him does more harm than good. Life imprisonment with daily forced labor would be fine with me.
Don't you know? It's patriotic to usher for the long and slow deaths of people who we went to war with. I don't know what says "I Love My Country" more than brutally and cruelly killing it's enemies.
