AmieStreet.com is a new-ish website. The basic idea is artists upoad their music to the site, and it is initially free for users to "buy" (it's free, so you just click "buy" and you have it). However, the more popular a song or album is, the more it costs (though the most expensive song on the site right now is $0.98, and there aren't many at that price). What this does is gives new artists a chance to be discovered (since their music is free, people have nothing to lose by trying them out). And, if you like a particular song, you can "rec" (short for recommend) it by writing up a short review.
It's really a great site, and I've found plenty of great music through it. I've spent a total of $13.06, so far, and I have 82 songs (most of which were free, and all of which are great songs).
And if you need any further help in deciding whether or not to try it out, here's their mission statement:
We support our artists by giving them 70% of song sales and never taking ownership of their creative work. We want all artists on Amie Street to be successful and we believe that our unique marketplace will accomplish this goal to a degree never achieved before.
great idea as a solution to the music price problem. charge more for the popular ones and price them on a popularity scale do you know if they're capping the price at 98c ?
