I have been having this problem for a very long time. Whenever QuickTime tries to do an automatic update or even if I try to update it manually, I get the following message during the process:
QuickTime
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'QuickTime.msi' in the box below.
Use source:
C:\DOCUME~1\REGGIE~1\LOCALS~1\TempIXP643.TMP\
I did a search for QuickTime.msi and found 3 different items in 3 different locations. But when I put any of the 3 in the "Use source:" box, I get the following message:
The file "C:\Documents and Settings\etc..." is not a valid installation package for the product QuickTime. Try to find the installation package 'QuickTime.msi' in a folder from which you can install QuickTime.
I have even tried to uninstall and reinstall it but I can't even uninstall it for the same reason.
My system information is as follows:
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2
Dell XPS MXC051 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73 GHz 1.73 GHz, 0.99 GB of RAM
If any additional information is needed, please advise. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
It sounds like your install of quicktime is borked. Can you repair install it? It should be an option instead of uninstalling when you click to uninstall it.
I'll take a look. I want to say that I tried that before I tried uninstalling it but it's been a long time and at this point I'm not sure if I tried it or not. I'll get back to you.
EDIT: I got the following message when I clicked the uninstall QuickTime option:
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.
Ok, here's the deal. I had to delete EVERY SINGLE QuickTime and Apple file and folder. Then I had to go through the registry and delete EVERY SINGLE QuickTime and Apple folder and value. I then used a registry booster to delete all the invalid registry entries created by my hacking and slashing. Reboot. Defrag the registry. Reboot.
I just attempted to re-install QuickTime and viola, it worked.
Thanks to everyone for your input and assistance. This thread has served its purpose and is ready for lockdown.
