Remember this game? (If you don't, or never heard of it, click here to learn about it) One of the only FPS I still play to this day, and is still (in my personal opinion) one game that is a blast to play, and deserves to be re-made. Despite it's lackluster graphics (c'mon...its 6 years old, cut it some slack) and admittingly bugged interface, it's the only FPS that I've played for 1000+ hours and still have not gotten bored of it.

So what about you? Have you played it? Do you still play it? Or perhaps an opinion?

...and have you heard about absolutely beautiful Renegade X mod that's coming out soon? (Also, look on youtube for the Renegade X trailer, if you loved Renegade, you'll be psyched about this).

I remember my cousin buying me this game back in the day, and I have to say it was a pretty solid FPS for its time. The cutscenes were all done with a motion capture crew which wasn't all that common back then so I was impressed with that. I definately think it would be great if they did remake it. I also liked the main character's name. Col. Havok!!! Simply awesome.

In my opinion, the campaign in and of itself sucked...badly. It's gem was it's multiplayer. Yeah you had Battlefield which required little teamplay, but in Renegade, teamwork from everyone is essential. You have to repair your structures, hold the enemy off from making too much money to support themselves, deal with their defenses, and depending on your target, co-ordinate 20+ people in doing a surgical strike against a building. Whether it being to lay down a nuke and cover it, or rush in with an APC, set off the proximity mines, and have another APC follow up and C4 the building to hell.

...good times.

of course i remember C&C Renegade. I love the C&C seires & when I found out they were making a fps I was very happy. It was a real good game in my opinion, lots of fun. I thought the acting/dialogue was kinda cliche, but eh. It wa sjust cool to actually see the C&C battles from the field & be a part of the fight rather than playing God, lol.

They are in production of a new C&C FPS right now, the graphics on it are sick. I can't wait for it's release.

Those were the days. I loved blitzing a base with a flame tank rush. It was kind of a bummer when I'd try to organize a blitz and only one other person would show up.
I remember one game on Field when I wanted to organize a Mendoza rush (best anti-building infantry, IMO), and there was only me and one other guy, so we decided to hit the GDI rax from the tunnels. A laser chaingunner joined in as a decoy for snipers. Just as we ran out of ammo, the rax died. It was a great day.

I'd love a challenge from any of you nostalgic players...You'll find me on the Jelly Marathon server under the nick of "colruss"

...it was supposed to be Colonel Russ, but WOL didn't allow that many characters...

... You so suck.... Zero Hour? That glitchy piece of crap? "Hey, let's just make a mod and stick random things together, regardless if the AI won't be quite sure what to do with it, then sell it as an 'expansion' "

It's part of the reason EA is dead to me... Command & Conquer, Enb, Westwood itself, and other games long forgotten who's fate they still have to answer for, I can't even stand to look at their logo anymore.

Now as to Renegade, well, ever since my desktop died on me I haven't played any FPS online, all I got is a tiny travel mouse to use along with my laptop here, and it just 'dies' on me enough that I'm sure I wouldn't go 10 second without dying because it screwed up again.

I remember when i first played it, I didn't think to use the mouse, so I went through the first two level with my cross hairs being at the exact same position on the screen the entire time, looking back on it , it pretty much shows to me how lame the AI was to let me get that far alive.

The last few years I played, it was pretty much all mods, the NOD Rocket launcher truck which would explode everytime you fired unless you had GOD mode on, the repeatable Ion cannon strikes, the playable mutants, etc. I remember really fun moments like in a mach where I was Nod on the field Map, and GDI had destroyed our base defenses, Hand of Nod, and airfield leaving us with only basic infantry to fight with. Sneaking in through the tunnels, I took a GDI base by surprised by hijacking a Mammoth Tank they had just left sitting there, and a technician, not nowing I wasn't on their side, kept trying to repair me while their other teammates fired. For that, I was kicked off, as the GDI host preferred we NOD stay at our base where they could keep camping us at the spawn points. It was also very fun to sneak in behind harvesters, a trick very few seemed to know at the time, and completely decimate a base with a single, well placed beacon. Then there were bad moments where I was a sniper, lining up a shot, then suddenly someone with a 56k modem would join right as i was taking it, and the person I was aiming would seem to 'teleport', and cut me off and kill me since they figured out where I was from my missed shot. Oh, and stealths putting C4 packs on my back... or the time I tried to disable a Nuke strike beacon, only to figure out, thanks to a glitch I didn't know about at the time, a Stealth had ALSO put on my back.... yeah...

In terms of rating, I'd give the game a C+, it was ok, graphics were substandard even for the time and the singleplayer didn't have much replay value, but I liked the music since it was the last CnC game Frank Kelpacki had a hand in, still, it really wasn't worth the 50 bucks I spent on it... should have waited for the price to drop... No, this game was awful. L2play. You couldn't dodge, the controls were shit, the first person was dismal at best. THe multiplayer was sort of fun for a LAN but kind of crap all-in-all.

Most games at the time couldn't dodge, I remember with the original Medal of Honor you could only bend to the side while holding a gun and on the move if wasn't a ranking match... never made sense to me...

The controls were fine, I don't get what your problem is, w,a,s,d and a mouse, like any other shooter, even if you didn't like how the other controls were situated , like 'action' or 'crouch', you could have customized it to your liking.

As to First person, well I found it to be far more difficult as 3rd person since the person was many times blocking a degree of my view, so it was only useful for quick looks around corners.

It was average, no more no less, fun to play at times, but nothing to brag about, and little that offered replay value besides mods, which is actually a fluke anyway. B)

I do like how the first/third person switch was a nearby key to wasd.
Also, dodging was usually just jumping in the air while moving around in circles. It was tough enough for a sniper, who had to dodge too.

Gotta love when people compare older games with the capabilities of the newer ones...like the dodging comment. Seriously, think about that stuff before saying it.

Anywho, I probably spent more time playing Renegade online than I've spent on X-Box Live TOTAL...and I'm on Live a lot. True it wasn't the greatest game ever but it was fun, had a nice weapons selection, plenty of great mods, a loyal following, maps that allowed for games that could end quick or turn into 72 hour slugfests (yes I had one battle that lasted 3 days before ending...Islands...last two buildings were the Refineries), a decent single player campaign, a great weapons selection control setup, and even had the Orca as a usable vehicle in multiplayer on certain maps.

Honestly, if there is one game I know I'll look back on and remember it's Renegade simply because of some of the moments memories. Stank Rushs, Mammy Base Defenses, truely epic tunnel battles, bum rushes, Shotty Hotty's, Mr. Tickles, The Sadan and Pickup Truck, Air Battles, watching a heavy armor rush stop cold because the is 1 proxy C4 in the road, 001 health moments, time C4ing snipers, Vehicle Hijacking, Splattering people with a Transport Chopper, Hammer vs Nod Buggy Races, Being turned into a Visceroid by a crate appearing where you stand, etc...
Most of these are anything but unique to the game but still, it seems like most of the people who spent more than a few games online had plenty of memorable moments to tell about. We even had a "RvB: Politics on the Internet" moment once.

Theres' a few of us who still LAN games on occation but it's obvious the glory days are gone. None the less. Renegade will go down as one of my favorite games ever even if it wasn't a Halo or Halflife. But then maybe that's why I liked it...it was it's own style and didn't try to be like the others.

You absolutely got to LOVE those marathon matches.

But I believe you've forgotten the Medium, Light, and buggy/humvee masses that could be created. God, I still get chills when I'm on the receiving end of one. Just seeing +25 Light tanks moving across the map towards your base makes you want to shit a brick.

But then again, that's when mammoths shine.

Renegade 2007 - Field & Hourglass Ingame Preview
I recommend watching those in High Quality.

This was not mentioned here yet but this mod is for Unreal Tournament 3 which is in stores now and is quite a fun game without this mod.

Oh I didn't forget those, they just really go without saying...and I mean that in a positive way. And don't forget when one massive rush meets another on an open field like Fields or Under. Some of those double rushes were enough to make the Battle of the Bulge during WW2 look like a pissed of cave men throwing rocks at eachother. Good times.

Ever carry a Mammoth into battle on top of 2 APCs? XD

Wow renegade was a lot of fun to begin with, didn't really get into it that much since I bought it with the CnC: the first decade box and then shortly after that my desktop died so I could no longer play it.

I might have to get UT3 JUST for the REnX mod when I get my new PC

I got to say...and I'm being brutally honest here...the more and more I see of Renegade X, the less I'm starting to like it.

For example, in hourglass. The walls to the GDI and NOD base were NEVER and should NEVER be that high. It gave advantages to both factions that now will be completely thrown out the window. What happens in a marathon game? You can shoot over the walls at the buildings with a tank rolling by since the walls are too high. So the only thing left is a stalemate.

It's the tiny things in the modifications that get left out which can make or break them. I sincerely hope Ren-X doesn't go down this path. It's far too pretty, and I'm sure all of you guys have spent an assload of time on it. But if there are way too many things cut out, or put in, or things are where they shouldn't belong, there are going to be a lot of disappointed loyal fans out there. Me included.
