Oni is a game unlike any other I've ever played. The gameplay is unbelievable. I've played Oni for the PC at least 20 times through, and have done all sorts of things to try to expand upon the wonder of the game.
It is mainly a melee combat fighter game from third-person perspective. There are guns, but there's nothing better than dashing up to your opponent and knocking him flat on his back with a powerful kick to the jaw, or sending him sailing off a ledge to the ground hundreds of feet below after breaking his neck. The range of techniques you can use to beat your opponents down is so vast, it never ceases to entertain me. Every battle is exciting and gives you a sense of accomplishment.
The plot isn't lacking, either. You play as a woman named Konoko in this anime-style game. She has been working for a law-enforcement group known as the TCTF for most of her life, but little is known about her past and herself. Throughout the course of the game, she discovers things about her life and the people within it. Uncovering these secrets will reveal to her who she is and just who she can trust.
Anyway, now that I'm done being an Oni commercial (none exist as far as I know,) I will tell you once again that it's a great game. For how awesome it is, I can't believe the lack of recognition its gotten. The only one person I have ever talked to that's played Oni has been Nico. So if you happen to be one of the few mysterious Oni-lovers that have managed to evade me all my life, perhaps you could toss in your two cents here.
Also, if this has been posted before, it either had an obscure title or was older than threads on page 6.
Well i loved the game. However I found myself using the martial arts of Konoko instead of guns mainly, wanted to make the game cooler than it already is. And this game had one of the best endings/boss i've ever seen in a game.
Oni is one of the best games ever (it would be the best if it had multiplayer). I told Everyone I knew who had or was getting a PS2 after I started playing Oni to get Oni for it.
BTW I only played the demo, but I've beaten level 4 at least 40 times and I'm still not sick of it.
I thought it was ok. I'd rather play Bloodrayne though. If you guys liked it maybe you should try playing Ghost in the Shell : Stand Alone Complex, I played the demo and it reminded me of Oni maybe it's the purple hair? or the third person view? or the melee and guns aspect? hmmmmm, lots of stuff in common.
I've never played it for the PS2, though I hear that have a few extra levels for the PS2 version. The PC version is fun, though, because there are cheats that you can play around with like killmequick, which makes all the enemies super strong. There's also reservoirdogs, which makes everyone go into a giant free-for-all battle. That never gets old. Then there's shapeshifter which lets you be any character model on the level, giving you their entire arsenal of combat moves and everything.
Another great thing about the PC version is that you can modify the level data files and move characters around and stuff. It's way more complicated than most games, so I never really got fully into it. I have messed around and put a bunch of guys into one room at once just so i could fight them, or make them fight each other. It's funny to see bosses kicking their friends' asses.
Anyway, that's enough of my Oni rambling for the moment, I suppose. I'm glad to see that there are actually other people that have heard of the game.
In reply to Leus, #8: I got this Game a couple of years ago in Germany, and It was one of the best games I've played in a long time. I loved the 3rd person and the combat system, a mix of gun fighting and hand-to-hand combat. Sadly, I lent this game to a friend and he lost it, so I only have the demo, which is good, but it's not the real thing. Still good though. Amazing game, go out and get it! itsa cheap!
I can't believe that there this many people that love Oni. When I got the game I didn't even wait to get hame to play. I installed it on my laptop in the mall parking lot. I think I've played that game through at least 50 times. It never gets old. What really amazed me was that for a game that old what astounding graphics it has. If you bump up the res, it looks breathtaking. Never gonna get rid of that game. It's beyond a classic game. It should be considered a legend.
I'm a complete Oni fanboy. Great game, great gameplay. I just enjoyed turning on Carousel (slow motion) and Fists of Legend and then using a Tanker to have this hugeass fight on Rooftops. I don't know what it was about that game, but I absolutely adored it.
Now of course we're all waiting to hear what Bungie's next Big Game is. I'm hoping it's Oni 2. They sold the rights to Rockstar back in the Microsoft acquisition, but it's not as if that company's doing anything with them, having Grand Theft Auto to milk for the next ten years. With Microsoft's purchasing power behind them, I believe the rights should be repurchased, and used to make yet another strong Bungie franchise on the Xbox.
This isn't really related to this game, but it has some significance with other Bungie games. Oni or ONI is an acronym and slang for the Office of Naval Intelligence in MD.
Actually, I was referring to the text on the Oni notepad, that translates as a brief background on the game, signed 'Cortana'... Sorry for being a Bungie geek. I'll shut up now.
Oni. Not the best game I've played but it's ok. In reply to #8, the cheats can be used for PS2 as well in the form of the PlayStation controller (Up, down, up, down, left, right, O etc.) of course. I remember the giant cannon you could get defeating that guy who traded his brain in for his metal suit. So slow yet so devestating. Loved the intro since it was some of the first anime I've ever seen (after Tombi, KAGERO, Ghost in the Shell and a few smaller titles.)
This game was so much better when you used the change model cheat, and you could use other people's moves. My favorite to use was Muro, because he had that badass neck snap.
