Doing your bitI don't know if you've noticed the site being unusually and increasingly slow lately... I know I have. Obviously (and predictably) the regulars of places like the Design Comments thread are blaming all the new features being added.I say they're only half right. Watch lists, if you think about how they operate, must take up a phenomenal amount of processing power - power that is finite. Every time you create a new news item in a group, it goes in your Watch list. Every thread, every time you decide to Watch someone or something, goes on a list for a script that more than likely has to constantly monitor all those locations for new postage. So... all those threads that haven't been used in months, all those groups you never bother to visit, all those funny guys who haven't logged on for two years... head over to your Watch List and unwatch them. If we all take 10% off our Watch lists, we might notice a phenomenal speed increase for the site. ...or I might be completely wrong and we might notice no change. Either way, this is something I try to make a habit of doing on the first Sunday of every month. I strongly recommend you pick a day to spend 20 minutes spring-cleaning your Watch list. |
