Fall from graceHello friends. So, as I hastily mentioned in my last journal, my laptop is dead. Completely fried beyond repair. I've taken it apart, put it back together, and taken it apart again, and cannot find a repairable issue. My dad might take it into a tech friend of his, but I don't expect much better news from his expertise. The situation in which the laptop met its doom was one beyond my control. Well, almost beyond. I was at a friend's place Friday night. He was having some people over for some drinking and whatever. I had to be early to work that morning, due to my parents need for vehicles, and as such I left early. My friend said I could go over to his place as soon as I was off work, so I'm hopped on bus and headed over. I knew there would be a lot of time to kill, as I got off work around 2:30, and most parties I've been to don't start until after 8, so I brought along my laptop along with a change of clothes, my booze, and various other objects of necessity and amusement. When I packed my bag that morning, I did not yet realize the eventual doom that would come to my computer. Later at my friend's place, I whip out the laptop and fiddle around with some games and such, keeping myself slightly occupied while I waited for other people to show up. But without the internet, one can only amuse himself to a certain extent. So the laptop went back into the bag, ne'er to be seen for the rest of the night... or at least not expected to be seen. It seems as the night progressed, and attendees got more intoxicated, the one named Brandon found himself sick and passed out. As such, the details are fuzzy, but here is what little information has been relayed to me: My bag found its way onto my lap. No idea why, but that's where it was. I'm going to assume I was getting something out of it during the time I was "pissed". Nevertheless, I had passed out onto the bag; I don't know how long, but I was apparently sleeping on the bag while it was on my lap. It then got moved onto the ground, though again I do not know why or when. More time passed, and I apparently reached for the bag to get something out of it; I can only assume it was my pajamas, as I found my jeans covered in vomit when I awoke in the morning, and I did not remember getting changed. I guess in my current state, I was having trouble with the bag, so my friend decided to help me. When he reached across to grab the bag, he held it from near the bottom. Not realizing it was open, as he pulled it up, the laptop slipped out. He says it couldn't have fell from any more than a foot. It was on the floor, and it merely slid out of the bag and hit the ground. I guess even an eight-inch fall is enough to kill a laptop... Either that, or something happened that I was not told. So, there's the story. My fault for bringing the computer to a party, sure. My fault for getting sick, I guess. My fault for opening the bag, possibly. But I don't think one can point much blame at anyone. The fact of the matter is: my computer is dead. As for computer access, I don't have much. The family computer at home is almost ten years old and running off life support; I don't expect to be using it unless I need to. I have my computer at work, but one can't be very active when he should be doing work. Besides those, I have the Wii and the Xbox. While I can talk to some of you guys via Live, it's not very often I get play-time when the kids are home. And fuck me sideways if I'm forced to use the Wii as a primary means of internet access. At this point, I'm stuck until I can get myself a new computer. After some calculations, it seems that I won't be able to afford anything like that until end of February at the earliest, but most likely late April... shit sux So, as for official stuff, I guess this means Retcast is on hold. Unless I can sort out with Tack a means of him recording and releasing on his own, I don't see any way we can continue until I'm back up and running. So much for releasing every Thursday... And, as I mentioned in my last journal, I'll try to keep up the list thing on Mondays as long as I can. Work should enable me to continue the game, but it's very possible that I might be late, or even unable to post some weeks. We'll see. Well, that's it for the update... If you're wondering how I was able to type all of this without a computer, I wrote it out in an email from home, and then copy/pasted it at work. I've got some links to the current state of my laptop below, if you need some proof, or just want to feed some sick curiosity. See you guys in a couple months. Be good while I'm gone. xoxo PS. For those tech-interested, I've removed the hard drive from my laptop, and salvaged a couple other things that may later come in use. I'm currently in the process of buying an external 2.5" HDD enclosure, so assuming my hard drive didn't get damaged, I should be able to access my data once I have another computer to work with. |
