Top five awesome things from Comic-con
Ok, so while the whole trip was awesome, and I enjoyed pretty much every day at the con, here is a recap of the top 5 moments/experiences/whatever from my weekend (all pictures very crappy because they were taken haphazardly with my iPhone)
5. Meeting Patrick Rothfuss ... twice
This one is partially just to make Poet even more jealous than he already is. I caught up with Spargmeister while he was waiting in line to get his copy of Name of the Wind signed. So I decided that I would as well. I only had a digital copy on my Kindle, and I joked with Pat about how I didn't think having him sign that would go too well. So I bought a paper copy and he signed that for me.
Then I ran into him again at the Girl Genius booth where we were both buying some GG books and getting them signed by the artist, Phil Foglio. One of the people at the booth asked him when the second book was coming out, and he sais, "It should be out," and I swear he was a heartbeat away from giving a date. I was practically on my tip-toes to make sure I caught it if he let it slip, but at the last moment he caught himself, thought for a second and said, "as soon as I can get it out without it sucking." So close
4. Spotting celebrities other people missed.
I swear, at times I felt like I was the only one actually paying attention to what was going on around me. I have a couple of good examples. First off, I went with Chipper to The Guild panel. Honestly, all I knew about the Guild going in was what I heard on the Dr. Horrible DVD. For some reason I had the impression that it was about lawyers, but Chipper wanted to go, and Felicia day is all sorts of pretty. So I went. Glad I did. It was awesome, and I went out immediately after the panel and bought both seasons on DVD. So thanks for exposing me to that, Chipper. Anyway, while we're waiting for the panel to start, but after everyone has taken their seats, a small group of people walk in. No one is really paying much attention to them, but I immediately recognize Joss Whedon wearing a big pair of sunglasses. I turn to Chipper, assuming she'd seen him too, and say, "Wow, those sun glasses are sure a great disguise, huh?" She wasn't really paying attention, but she mumbled something, and eventually the panel started. A few minutes later, she nudges me and shows me something (I think it was a twitter) saying that there was a rumor that Joss was at the panel, or something like that, and I was like, "He is. Did you seriously not see him?" Apparently not many people noticed him. Next, Sparg, his brother, and myself are walking down the street toward the club where they're having a True Blood party that Chipper clued us into. Free food and possibly True Blood stars. I look ahead, and who should I see but Brent Spiner (Star Trek's Data) walking toward us, a woman to either side of him (don't know if they were with him or just walking that way as well, I like to think the former). He looks a little bit morose. So I don't say anything, and we pass by each other. When I think he's out of earshot, I say, "And that was Brent Spiner." Both of my companions flip around instantly to look behind us. They hadn't noticed him at all. Third time, I'm back at my hotel, disheartened because I lost my badge a little over halfway through Saturday and missed my chance to see Stan Lee because of it. Walking through the lobby toward the elevators, when who should I see but Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) apparently heading over to have lunch in the restaurant that Chipper and I had breakfast in the day before. Dozens of Comic-con attendees strolling back and forth in the lobby. I look around, no one is giving the lady a second look. I was shocked that I was the only one who seemed to notice her. There were a couple others like that guy from Taxi and B5, but those were the big ones.
3. The Lost panel
There was too much awesomeness in the Lost panel, but I'll try to get a good overview going. I wasn't planning on going. My friend got up at 5 AM to wait in line. I was like, screw that. Then Chipper texted me at almost 9 to tell me that the line was relatively short, and she was actually going to be able to see the panel this year. I was still in bed. So I told her to enjoy herself and tell me how it went afterwards. She then told me that if I got my badge before they went in I could cut in line with them. I immediately jumped up, grabbed a quick shower, and rushed down to register for my badge. Chipper came out and got me, and she, Kroze, Matt, and friends let me into line with them. When we got in Kroze and Matt went off to their special "we won the theme song contest" seats (if you haven't, hit the Lost thread and see their song. It's quite good), and the rest of us got some prime seats just feet from the microphone where people lined up to ask questions. Damon and Carlton were great as always, and then who should show up at the question asking mic just feet from me, but Jorge Garcia (Hurley). A few minutes (and some obviously scripted but still funny bits) later, and Michael Emerson (Ben) joins him (you can see them near me in the foreground and on the screen in the background).
Sawyer, Richard, and Charley eventually showed up as well (though not standing as close to us, sadly), and Sawyer had the funniest bit where he uses a "taser" on Damon and calls him JJ. Abrams, Linda, and several other names. The whole thing was terrific, funny, and there were some very interesting hints about what is going to be happening in the final season.
