Mars and Orion

I looked out my window late last night (early morning) and saw a very nice clear sky full of stars. Amongst that was the constellation Orion (my fav), which I hadn't seen since earlier in the year. Looking at my Starry Night Widget it affirmed what I thought was Mars was it.

Not a super amazing photo or anything, a bit grainy due to the highest ISO setting because its hard to shoot dark stuff (long exposures) with my shaky hands. :P

...and I'm not liking how Flickr doesn't allow my free account larger scale images, It resizes them down far too much.

I can tell which is the North Star and that's about it. I think I used to know Orion's Belt and one of the dippers, that's the extent of my knowledge of heavenly bodies.

Oh, and the moon.

...

And the sun.

You should have drawn Orion out with Paint. Like the entire dude with the sword and everything.

I just called Orion a dude. Huh. Huh. Cooool.

Nice tag.

I liked my astro class and lab. The night labs were so much fun and we saw so many cool things on the hooge telescopes...

In reply to EmThree, #2:

heh, I actually thought about drawing that.

I wish the astro class I took had a night lab. Can't be done at my school I'm sure in the city. But at least I can say I took a class taught by Michio Kaku. :)

I really do miss having Starry Night Pro on my dad's desktop.... It was good times with our old 6" refractor dinosaur on the Alt-Azi mount scanning the sky. But that was nothing compared to going out to the South Dakota Badlands with the scope and a notepad, though. What light pollution?

I really want to go all out when I get a new DSLR. I've been looking for a mount that will allow the use of a Ritchey-Chretien as a lens for a 5D Mk2.

I do love star gazing - it's nice to get out of the city to do so though.

Super cool. I'd like to get into this kind of thing, as I'm sure my daughter would find it interesting in a few years.
