Passing Judgment

If you don't own this record, or haven't heard it, you are pretty much a giant square in my book. I fucking hate Arcade Fire so you can chide me for that in return if you wish.

With every instrument played by Dave Grohl, save for one guitar track played by Greg Dulli from the Afghan Whigs on X-Static, the Foo Fighters' first eponymous album is a one man tour de force. Dave had to prove he would not linger in Kurt Cobain's shadow and in my humble (lol) opinion he vaulted over it on his first try.

Nirvana bears the curse of being "the band" of their era. As a result, while the music is still excellent, I've heard it so much that I never need to listen to it again. Just like Metallica's "Master of Puppets", I know every note on "Nevermind".

And possibly because of this or maybe because I just prefer what Grohl created if I was forced to pick, I would keep the first two Foo albums in my collection over the first 2 Nirvana records. And though Nevermind got me fiddling around with my guitar more, this album drove me to practice. I spent hours every day working on my bar chord slides trying to keep up. I could only dream of writing something as intense, varied, and sincere as this record.

That dream is not dead, btw.

This record is 16 years old and it is still in a regular rotation in my life. Lyrically, the album is sometimes campy and weak, but not all of it. Obviously, the drums are outstanding. And writing both guitar parts for a song? There are plenty of musicians that do this, but that doesn't mean it's any good. Most dual guitar bands split that duty (someone comes up with a riff, the other compliments it) but he wrote both parts which is another source of awesome.

I can easily put this album in my top twenty of all time. Music and the love of it is all subjective, of course. But between simply loving the songs, identifying with the more "honest" lyrics, and the motivation it gave me to actually play the guitar I paid money for, this album is a building block of my spirit and attitude.

Thank you, Dave Grohl.

I'll stick around (The video quality is horrible but the audio is mother-fucking tizz-ight!)

Foo definitely owns. Even their newer stuff is still really good.

The CD holder in my car holds 15 CDs. I think four of them are FF.

I don't have the debut, but I do have Colour and the Shape and One by One. Also, any FF songs that come out for Rock Band are a must-buy for me.

And I had an Arcade Fire song playing on random when I clicked this alert, that was kind of weird.

IMO, Foo Fighters pwns Nirvana. Flame me, do whatever, but they are just a better band. Period. Yeah, Nirvana was at the front of a "musical" revolution, but I think that Foo Fighters have withstood the past 16 years and still come up with amazing stuff.

Dave Grohl is a ridiculously awesome musician and the best thing that ever happened to him was the end of Nirvana. It sucks saying that, but it's the truth. He has done more than he probably would have with Nirvana. Their "debut" album, or rather - Dave Grohl's solo project (in a sense) - is a great album.

In reply to kickcows, #8:

Nirvana was the worst band to make it big bearing the title "grunge". Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees and several others were lightyears ahead of what Nirvana was doing. Nirvana, however, was the most accessible, which helped garner some popularity. In addition to that, not understanding what Kurt was saying meant the listener could passively not think about what the song itself.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: "Mr. Grohl, while you were with Nirvana, where were you hiding all that talent?"

I loved Nirvana when I was but a teenager, but as much as I loved Mr Cobain and fangirled like the hormonal fuck up that I was, there was no way anyone could ignore how talented Dave (and Krist) was. It was obvious then and his massive collection of top grade work makes it obvious now. Even though I was a Nirvana fan I totally agree with Kickcows above that the end of Nirvana was the best thing that could have happened to Dave. Nirvana had gone as far as they could and if Kurt had lived and carried on with it, it might have trailed on into something sad and pathetic. It was a spring board that launched Dave into the fucking stratosphere.

Enough of my inane ramblings.

tl;dr : Dave Grohl is a musical love muffin of massively talented proportions, and the man can rock a fucking beard like no other.

I always thought Cobain was overrated.

I also think suicide is a pretty lame trip.

Also you don't like Arcade Fire? Finch... finch... too much 80s and 90s in your blood. DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT THE KIDS ON THE STREET ARE LISTENING TO THESE DAYS? DISCO, MOTHERFUCKER.

I could listen to Foo Fighters for hours on end and be enthralled the whole way through.

In fact, I've been working on integrating a couple Foo songs into my band's cover repertoire.

Fuck. and Yes.

Most played station on pandora at the moment: Foo Fighters.

Band most likely to get lodged in my brain for days and actually be a GOOD thing: Foo Fighters.

Band I would hug and make cupcakes for in an instant: Foo Fighters.

Band I would take Finch to see: Foo Fighters.

Band I would run carelessly through a dewy meadow on a misty spring morning: Foo Fighters

"This Is a Call" was my first exposure to that band and they have been consistently awesome ever since.

But thanks for making me feel old about it being 16 years old, butt nugget.

The album is almost as old as I am, so I don't feel too lame for never having heard it
I have also never heard Arcade Fire, and when I see "FF" I think Franz Ferdinand.

I'm going to go against the grain here. I like the passion in many of Nirvana's songs better. I don't care that they weren't as technically proficient or whatever as Kyle mentions. Kurt expressed himself in a very raw way that appealed to me greatly. To be fair, I've not listened to the radio at all for so long that I never get burned out on songs when they get crazy popular.

That being said, I like the Foo Fighters plenty as well, and have two of their cds. One of them is this one.
