Not good times

Just got off the phone with someone at the Minnesota Historical Society about a... side project I'm working on. I took a look at their website while waiting for him to scan something and e-mail it to me and found this:

That's what was drawn up sometime in the 80s about the effect of a nuclear bomb would have if dropped at the state fair grounds here in MN. I would have lived about... four miles from ground zero as long as it had gone off after 1986, though my parents still would have been within five miles of ground zero from 1981 on. Thankfully it didn't happen, but it is still scary to think about.

My dreams are likely to be unpleasant tonight.

Think about this instead: It's Minnesota, no one cares about it enough to drop a nuclear weapon on it.

This. Seriously, what are the odds? Minnesota is about as non-threatening as it gets.

It's good for people to keep the bigger picture in mind. Although it's not comforting to think that I would be dead after 20 minutes of agony, and my dog's death would take substantially longer.

There are enough nuclear weapons on this planet to wipe out every major city on the planet. The Twin Cities qualifies.

I remember these.
In Reagan's America, this was important information. Fucking psycho.

This was the very real facts of the soviet half of MAD. I'm sure Minneapolis was one of the targets. All major metro areas were. So were significant parts of the plains and anywhere near US missile silos or military or manufacturing centers. You and your folks had it good... that close to the intended ground zero would have meant an easy time of it. The poor bastards farther out along the fringe of the blast radius would have suffered much more.
