So sad
Sheila Satonin never looked over her shoulder when she came home at night or worried about her grandchildren playing outside her apartment at Guardian Courts.
But that was before a locksmith was shot in the face Wednesday in the apartment complex parking lot. Satonin and another resident adminstered first aid to Troy Mitchell before he was taken away by ambulance.
Mitchell died at about 11:20 p.m. Thursday at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Police have made no arrests in the shooting.
"I'm terrified," 56-year-old Satonin said Thursday. "You should feel secure where you live, but I don't anymore."
Wednesday morning Satonin was at home in her second-floor apartment in Guardian Courts, putting away groceries from a trip to Sav-A-Lot, when she heard screams for help.
She ran down one flight of stairs to a car parked below her living room window, where another neighbor was bending over Mitchell.
He had been shot in the face while working on a car at the apartment complex.
"I can't get that image out of my mind," Satonin said. "A man trying to do an honest day's work and gets shot in the head."
Mitchell's shooting is the latest in a string of violent crimes in Jackson in the last seven weeks that has left five people dead and sent 11 others to the hospital with injuries.
Mitchell is a 22-year decorated Marine combat veteran and father of seven. Police have said they believe robbery was a motive for the shooting. Troy was my friend and coworker's brother-in-law. He had 7 boys ranging from 5 years old to 27 and one just came home from Iraq because of this. I want to know what makes someone think it's ok to take someone's life over a few bucks and a cell phone. Who the fuck is sick enough to do this?
His family is overwhelmed by support from the community and even the Fox News Network for setting up funds. I met the man just once when I locked my keys in my truck a long time ago, but it's still shocking that something like this would happen in my town.
I had to post this. I'm at my parent's right now and I still don't have internet at the new place. I'm afraid to scroll down and see my alerts... Luis and Lise, I hope you two had a great time!
