No, I'd like my money back

I've always donated money to charities because I've never had the drive in me to help those in need by volunteering. What irks me is when these charities are paying people to call and ask me for MORE money. I just received a call from one of the charities I donate to (on a monthly basis). They said that they are cutting down costs, and that they are no longer sending me mailings and that they wanted to update me on how I am making a difference. So I listen to this monotone person drone on about what they're doing, and at the end she asks, "Isn't that amazing" in a monotone voice. Then she said I can help even more by donating an additional $10 a month. This call wasted 10 minutes of my life.

Here's how you can cut down on costs:
Stop sending me PACKAGES every month with glossy photos on how I can help even more people by donating more money
Stop sending me labels, greeting cards, gifts to guilt me into donating more money
Stop sending out emails every week on how I can help even more people by donating more money
Stop hiring monotone workers to call me and guilt me into donating more money

It'd be smart of the Christian charity thing to stop with the tv and internet ads.

Of course.. Smart and Christianity.. Those two things don't go together..

I get these Tibetan prayer flags or some damned thing from someone asking for money. Except I don't believe in prayer. And yet... There's this little part of me that feels just a teeny tiny bit bad when I unceremoniously toss the stupid things.

Next time they call again, wait for the 10 minutes, then say, "wait, you mean I'm LOSING money as we speak? What exactly does 'donating' entail? Also, I'd like my money from the past year back, thanks."

Okay so I also put aside a chunk of money for charities and there is a bit of a trick to the whole thing I've learned over the years. First of all, if you give to one, you often get put on a list and pretty soon you are getting mail from lots of charities. The charities spending a ton of time sending letters and free pens and umbrellas and other stupid worthless shite to you and calling you spend a bigger portion of your donation on administration and getting more money.

SO... you go to a website such as www.charitynavigator.org/

You put in the charity you're interested in and it will tell you straight up exactly what you want to know. For instance, I donated to Mothers Against Drunk Driving for a long time and then finally they just drove me insane. The last straw was when they sent me an umbrella and slippers. I was like, f*ck you MADD, your money is going to childhood cancer this year.

Anyway, check out that website or one like it so you can make better informed choices about donating. THere are some scam charities out there too, and you want your moeny to go to a good cause, I'm sure.

ALSO, I've gotten to the point where if anyone calls me on the phone asking for ANYTHING I just say, "Sorry, I don't do business by phone, take me off your list please, goodbye" and hangup without letting them even say another word. I'm polite and I don't waste their time.

I used to dontate to a charity pretty regular until I had a follow up call.

I had only dontated like $20 that time because I was pretty strapped (but still wanted to help) and they actually called me to ask why the change in amount, if I was upset at law enforcement or something (it was for the State Police).

I really didnt appreciate the tone taken.

Then they offered to send me an extra bumper sticker showing I donated, despite me saying that I never put bumper stickers on my car(s), and law enforcement doesnt pull me anyway unless it's to shoot the shit.

That was my last year donating to them.

I called Cheif and told him what was up, and I think he lit a fire under someones ass for it.

For the next few years I made a more controlable contribution by helping the Police out directly.
