Remembrance Day

Today is Remembrance Day, I have today off.

Here are some monuments around town.

This one is most common one if you were to do a web search for Charlottetown.
It was originally dedicated to the soldiers in World War I because it was built around 1926.
A dedication to World War II and Korea was added later.

This is dedicated to Canadians they died in South Africa during the Boer War

This one represents the "torch mentioned in the poem "Flanders Fields".

The inscription reads:

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
.
.
.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

.

We had the two minute silence over here at work. Not as many people wearing poppies this year, I had to go searching to find somewhere selling them.

It's 'Veterans Day' here in the states - same idea. There weren't any poppies to be found in our area either - but we did see some Veterans at the local grocery on Saturday - we stuffed the donation can and they offered us a small plastic flag..... (we passed).

Freedom has never been free - and I salute all those who serve or who have served their country!

I tried to watch the ceremony on TV from Ottawa... turns out, a 3 year old is more interested in Treehouse TV, than that. Who knew?

Apparently poppies are now a Canadian tradition more than US. While I was in Montreal, I had to ask someone why they were wearing a little flower lapel pin.
