Music Video

I just finished my Media Studies coursework for this year: to produce a music video. This is that video. I'm intentionally not saying much about it because I'm interested to read what you guys think and interpret from it. Thanks!

Questions, suggestions and more comments

I really like the colours, contrasts and pacing of most of the clip

... is the hand sway intentional when the subject is standing near the door (about 0:12 in)
... nice surreal feeling, with the cuts from leaving the house in darkness to walking beneath the trees and then in the park
... 0:52 use slow motion for the walk through the park, the subject swinging the arms maybe a little more in smooth arcs, still with head down, closer shot to focus on the subject a bit more?
... 1:01 effective shot, but remove camera drop?

I'm in at about 3:03 at the moment. It's looking great, especially after the 1:01 mark there's much more consistency in style and it's that bit smoother too :)

... 3:48 switch to faster tempo, movement shots, nice switch while maintaining style
... 4:35 you've gone for more light and movement with the happiness ... more light for this section, maybe just focussing on the attention of the happiness?

Interpretation
(I'm not listening closely to the lyrics so I'm just trying to interpret the visual message with the melody)

Boy is depresed
Boy is suddenly happy
Seems to be triggered in relationship to that older woman appearing?
Boy is happy that woman has arrived?

On a second pass ...

Boy is not happy in the house, with whoever it was that was watching the tv.
Leaves house but is still not happy; not happy at school either.
Then the boy finds out an older female relative (mum, aunt, grandma, grand aunt?) will be arriving soon and he is happy.
He is excited to see she is there ... then so happy she has brought over ... his new nephew?

Note: I am using a notebook screen. It could be the angle I've got it on, but when the boy is standing in darkness, seeing the woman has arrived, I didn't even see the boy the first time. Possibly too dark?

In summary great work; maybe a few small touch ups to show off your skills from the get go (your video hints at how good it is, then shines at 1:00)

Nice job, I just made a Halo music vid. A little amatuer though but I still like it, it feels good after you have made something you worked hard on.

Excellent. Fits into "artsy" pocket quite nicely. Colour manipulation worked well especially with the light highlighting effect.

Pretty Good song Here is what i have to say:

*Camera was shaky in the beginning when you where trying to slowely pan and at a few other points. almost seemed like it was screwed two tight onto the tripod and when it moved it jumped.
* vocals where not where the could have been( i only hear and say this because i am a vocal major and i here that kind of stuff)
* very good effects with the camera
*lighting could use a little work

Overall it was a very well made video. Congrats!

First of all, love the song. I really like that version of it too.

I think the lighting and colors go really well with the song, especially the part where he's sitting at the bar and its sort of centered around his face. My favorite part was around 4 minutes I think when the tempo of the song picks up and its almost like the music matches up with the shots of the road going by. I'm not sure it was intentional but that was what it looked like to me.

The whole video was really cool, and I think you did a great job! :)

I decided to leave out the full comment on youtube out and will put it here instead:

Beginning was a bit too dark. Kid lip-syncing the words was bad idea since it was at random intervals. Feels a little bit like "Where the Wild Things Are" when the music picks up speed, not just because of the song, but how the video is done. Last bit where screen goes black and then shows the kids face again for a second, then goes black again is weirdly pointless.

All in all good.

I like the shading of the entire thing, and the way you edited it near the end when it got happy. You portrayed the mood very well with it I think, and it is definitely great work. I liked the way (intentional or not) that in the beginning the camera was slowish moving and mostly facing the ground whereas near the happy end it was more towards the sky and the things happening around. All in all a great music video. Kudos to you.

The beginning was a little bit shaky but overall it was a beautiful piece of work. I give it a 9 out of 10.

First, I have to say the artist's voice is very grating. You have nothing to do with that, I'm sure. I almost had to mute the video, but I really liked the instrumental part. You did some pretty amazing things with the lighting. Some parts were too dark, HOWEVER, that could be due, largely, to my lack of a high quality computer. ^_^ My favorite shot of the whole video was the weeping willow tree. Beautifully done. The worst part... would have to be where I have to assume you were in a car, adjacent to the subject's car and the camera was shaking too much. Other parts of the video were shaky, but I feel that was ok w/in the context of the video. Some might say it was akin to Blaire Witch, with the camera movement, but aside from the car shot, I really liked the camera movement. I'm glad things turned out happy for the kid at the end of the video. Overall, very well done, Ben!
