CurrentlyI don't normally do these type of journals, but figured "why not?". So:I am currently reading: * 1635: The Cannon Law by Eric Flint, part of his "1632" alternative history series *1634: The Ram Rebellion by Flint/Virginia DeMarce, part of the same series * The War of Wars: The Epic Struggle Between Britain and France: 1789-1815, non-fiction about the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars Currently/recently playing: *Super Smash for the N64. Old school, baby. *Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Ever though I suck at it *Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings. Just saw the old disk laying around, and though "why not?" The Mongolian campaign is giving me problems though. Just saw (and this is where the rant comes in...): * Fantastic Mr. Fox No rant here. I actually wasn't that thrilled as I was watching it, because I was expecting a lot of comedy based on the previews, and while it was funny at times, it was a bit more serious than I expected. Looking back on it though, the characters were all great, and it handled everything really well, it just wasn't what i was expecting, but it was still a really good movie. On the other hand, I also just saw: *Avatar. Freaking Avatar. Now that bothered me. Is it possible for a director/screenwriter to ruing his own work? Because I think Cameron has. Sure, it was a cliche-storm, but the thing is that sci-fi doesn't get that much mainstream big movies, so it wasn't like it had been done to death. And the setting and plot were approached really well. They were almost believable. This could've been a freaking great epic. And it was, in a way. But it got SO damn preachy. And I don't just mean in the usual Hollywood way, I mean turning it up to 11. It just made it barely watchable, despite me praying desperately for a sequel that explores all of the complexities of the universe, while the film just sort of glossed over. Apparently there's online backstory that fills it out a bit, but the film is just like "well this one guy became a turncoat and so there was this one battle and yeah that's just everything." Annoys me. The cinematography was amazing though. Unbelievable animation. |
