Bad Good NewsI just got a call tonight from my brother out west. He's been stationed in Victoria for years in the Canadian Navy. He called me first because I'm getting married next year and he was asked by my fiance to be a groomsman and he knows what he just found out will affect our wedding plans. He's been applying to go to Afghanistan for a while and he was finally accepted. He'll be heading out in April after 6 months of training in Petawawa. The unfortunate thing is that I'm going to be getting married in June next year, so he'll no longer be around to be a part of the wedding or even just attend. It makes me sad that they're sending him to a war I don't agree with. It makes me sadder that it will be a dangerous situation and there's more of a chance of him not coming home. And don't get me started on wishing my little brother could be there with us at the wedding. Yes, it's a great career move for him. It will take him to new heights and I know he's very focused on his naval career. Yes, he'll have a great experience that will stay with him forever and he'll become more worldly. Yes, he'll make a lot of money out there and be very comfortable for a while. I'm proud of him and his ambition. He's grown up to be a great kid (he's 27 now) and I think he'll do well in life. I just wish he could be by my side at my wedding and I wish I could protect him from all that is dangerous. |
